Even from the dawn of the college i.e. 1956, the department has been training prospective teachers of English. The faculty of the department has a unique combination of experience and enthusiasm. Many stalwarts have been rendering their services through the department. It was the department of English behind bringing out the V.O.C.Journal of Education from the year 1959 to 1972. The department has conducted the following seminar getting the financial assistance from the UGC.
The department has also convened inter-collegiate ENGTA-FEST (English Tamil Fest) for the Prospective Teachers for the Colleges of Education in and around Thoothukudi District as a part of the celebration of the birth centenary of our founder KulapathiA.P.C.Veerabhahu. Dr.S.RasulMohaideen, one of the faculties in the department, is the person who guided many number of Ph.D scholars from our Centre for Research in Education so far.
The department has been adorned with many stalwarts starting from Prof.K.N.AnanthaPadmanaban as the founder professor of English from 1956. He was followed by Prof.Narayanan, Prof.P.Jinarajadass, Prof.Govindaraj and Dr.L.Vasantha Srinivasan. Dr.P.Jinarajadass and Dr.L.Vasantha Srinivasan were also serving as the principals of the college. Dr.P.Vasantha Srinivasan was the awardee of Kalaimamani by the State Government of Tamilnadu.
