History

Department of Tamil was started in our college in the year 1987. It has been the only college offering B.Ed. Tamil as on aided course in the jurisdiction of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. i.e. three districts Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. Many students from deprived and marginalized classes can pursue their B.Ed. Tamil course through this college with scholarship.

Dr.V.Thamodharan was the founder Professor in the department serving from 1987 and retired in the year 2015. He was also serving as the principal. Dr.U.Viji also had been serving in the department for about a decade from 2008 to 2018. Mrs.C.Girija M.A. M.Ed., M.Phil., CTE, is now working as the Assistant Professor in the department.

Mission:
  • To help student teachers build knowledge of content, methods of literary studies and creative writing.
  • To prepare student teachers for professional and graduates study and for life long learning.
  • To trains student teachers communication skill in Tamil.
  • To strengthen their ability to analyze all forms of literary expression in Tamil teaching.
  • To graduate well prepared qualified and competent student teachers have the ability to integrate and co-operate with all section of the society.


  • ‘Think high, whatever you think’ is the value emphasized on every teachers. The development in the field of education only determines the development in other sectors of the Nation. Mother tongue is the reason behind individuals’ development, his or her thinking skills, creativity, knowledge, etc. The uniqueness of V.O.C. College of Education, in this regard, is sensitizing those people having Tamil as the mother tongue and medium of instruction on the richness of Tamil language and its wealth of literature and grammar. The Department of Tamil has two different streams namely aided wing for those admitted directly through counseling and other those admitted as the additional intake. The students are admitted only on merit basis following reservation policy of the state government even in additional intake.
